Hi,
I am contemplating upgrading RH 7.1 kernel from 2.4.2-2 to 2.4.9-34 for
both Uni-processor and SMP architecture on Compaq machines.
I have followed all the RH docs. and checklist on how to upgrade kernel
using RPM.
I have visited http://updates.redcom.com/ for the latest kernel RPM and
found that there are two architectures relevant to my upgrade, i.w. i386 and
i686;
The i386 has the following kernel rpms:
initscripts-5.84.1-1.i386.rpm kernel-source-2.4.9-34.i386.rpm
kernel-2.4.9-34.i386.rpm mkinitrd-3.2.6-1.i386.rpm
kernel-headers-2.4.9-34.i386.rpm SysVinit-2.78-17.i386.rpm
and the i686 has the following;
kernel-2.4.9-34.i686.rpm
kernel-smp-2.4.9-34.i686.rpm
It is self-explained that for the Uni-processor (i386) I need all those listed
for i386, but the i686 for SMP do I need both the i386 and i686 as listed?
My current kernel 2.4.2-2 has both Uni-processor and SMP kernels installed so
to give us the redundancy to boot the other when the default is having problem.
Can someone please shed some light??
Much thanks,
Regards,
Daniel
