Subject: Compiling RPM from source

I've been looking for information on compiling RPM from source for some ancient machines running the 2.0.37 that didn't come with RPM as part of their installation package.  I've installed the prerequesite DB-1.85 API (via DB-4 with '--enable-compat185') and both zlibc and libc.  The ld.so.conf has been populated and just for grins I made copies of both these libraries all over the place.  However if I see the error message "configure: error: sorry rpm requires libz.a or libgz.a (from the zlib package)" just one more time....

What gives?

Karyn
