Fail To compile 4.0.4 (was: no subject)

I get the same compile message and error with
command:

CFLAGS="-march=i386 -O2" ./configure --without-db

The compiler looks like to insist on using
-march=i586 -O3
regardless the above parameters. Did I do anything
wrong?

<< Try with CFLAGS="-march=i386 -O2". Maybe K6-2 for
notebooks differs from its desktop relative.>>
