I have just done exactly as you told me to and the
result is again the same - "-march=i586 -O3" appears
during make.

FYI: One of the first few lines from configure shows:

Checking whether the C compiler (gcc -march=i386 -O2
) works .. yes

rm config.cache
export CFLAGS="-march=i386 -O2"
export CPPFLAGS=$CFLAGS
./configure --without-db

If the i386 doesn't kick in, then there's a deeper
problem.
