Building an i686 kernel rpm

Subject: Building an i686 kernel rpm

I'm trying to build an i686 kernel rpm I downloaded the src rpm added my
patches the issued rpm -ba kernel.spec  I also tried rpm -ba --target=i686
kenel-2.4.spec  and all I end up with is the rpms in my i386 directory.
