i think you're missing the fact that Michael is building a kernel rpm, not
just a modified kernel.  even if he is only upgrading the kernel on one
system, it would still make future upgrades easier.  i have found this to
be the case in my department, where i modify the stock rh6.2 kernels to
best fit our systems.  we have only one SMP system, but i still find that
maintaining the smp version of our modified kernel rpm keeps things
cleaner than just installing kernel-source and compiling manually.  of 
course, "cleaner" and "easier" are subjective terms...
