I do understand the difference I've used the kernel-source rpm to build and
install my own custom kernels, but I've never used it to build a kernel
rpm. I just figured I would use the src rpm so I could use redhats spec
file.

you're not losing anything by using the kernel-source RPM. i'm suspecting
you might not appreciate the difference between the kernel-source and
kernel "src" RPMs.
unless you need to see the "pristine" kernel source, as well as the redhat
patches to that, go with kernel-source.
