Removing Duplicate Package Entries on Redhat 8

somehow i have 2 copies of the package "vnc-server" in listed rpm, both with 
the same filename "vnc-server-3.3.3r2+tight1.2.6-1.i386.rpm" on Redhat 8... 
not that the package or filenames really matter much... just that there are 
duplicates...

rpm refuses to --erase either one, even with --nodeps set, and only gives 
the message "error: "vnc-server" specifies multiple packages" ...

the --rebuilddb option doesn't make it go away ...

any ideas would be welcome.
