Alternate package names?

Hi,

I am relatively new to managing packages with rpm, and I run into this problem
several times. So, I have Suse Linux 8.0. Some of the packages that come with
it by default are old, and some are just named slightly differently than in
other instalations (gtk instead of gtk+ etc). I want to upgrade some of my
packages. I get the rpm, and it tells me that the dependencies are not
satisfied. I know that I have the right package, but it has a different name.
In another version of the same problem, the package I am installing may have a
differently capitalized name from the version I have on disk, and I will get
file conflicts. I can force the install, but next time use yast, it will
notice unresolved dependencies or conflicting files and complain, too.

Is there a way to get around this? I would like to be able to tell RPM that
the set of names in fact refers to the same package. Or to change the name and
dependencies in the package I am installing to what I need. I have not been
able to figure out how to do it easily. I have been making my own rpms by
re-compiling the tar.gz files, but that is extra trouble and takes away much
of the convenience from the whole rpm system.
