well, you see one of my favourite complaints about SuSE here, they just
repackage every thing under a different name and make it impossible to use
at least Source-RPMs of other distributions.

a lot of (if not most) packages are available as Source-RPM as well, which:
- makes rebuilding very easy, rpm(build) --rebuild foo.src.rpm
- and never the less gives you the comfort of the rpm-database.
If you are sure about having everything you need, you might follow one of
the suggestions a few days ago about packages only Providing dependancies
with installing any files.
