Hmmm, total brain fart on my part. Signing behavior wrto hardlinks
was changed to avoid dataloss if/when ENOSPC was encountered while
rewriting into the original file.

IIRC (and I sometimes forget, sigh) this was on a RHL 7.1 time frame.
