It wasn't a basic thing then merely because networked computing wasn't so
widespread. From your description, it doesn't sound like anything someone
asked to solve that basic problem wouldn't come up with pretty quickly.
That said, on patents in general: until the stupid overall patent situation
is resolved, I think we need some good, strong, defensive patents
irrevokably licensed to be used with free / open source software. But I
question whether bringing one which appears so weak on the surface into the
mix would be helpful or harmful overall.
