RedHat RPM Problems ?

Hi!

 I'm running RedHat 8.0, and when trying to isnatll a number of packages
using apt-get (to retrieve the packages):

apt-get install inn-devel

The console/ssh-connection locks up. The RPM used is rpm-4.1-1.06.i386.rpm

Restarting the machine does not help, I'm still unable
to perfrom operations on the RPM database.... Running rpm --rebuilddb
doesn't even help me...

How do I get this problem fixed ? Is the rpm database messed up, and Will I
have to do a re-install of the host to get the problem solved ?Or how do I
solve the problem (right now I'm unable to perform any RPM operations on
that PC)
