The easy way to test if NPTL is the problem is to use the
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL hack:

  LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 rpm -qa

I'm running SGI's XFS-friendly kernel on a Red Hat 9 box, and I've got
to set that silly environment variable any time I want to query or
update the rpm database.
