recompiling a package I installed with rpm

I have a problem with php, in which I need to recompile it. I originally installed php at redhat installation time, from the rpm package included on CD #3 on Redhat ES 3. I have tried building an rpm from the src.rpm's for php but I get compile errors with rpmbuild --recompile php...rpm. How would I go about recompiling php since I originally installed it from an rpm?
