What is the best way to retrieve the identity of a distro?
OK, check it out:
[root@enigma mnt]# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.3-7mdk (nplanel@n3.mandrakesoft.com) (gcc version
3.3.2 (Mandrake Linux 10.0 3.3.2-6mdk)) #1 Wed Mar 17 15:56:42 CET 2004
This is silly.
This says that your kernel was compiled on a box that somehow features
mandrake. If you compile your kernel yourself, it's probably gone.
Also I second the statement from someone earlier, it's pointless to make
assumptions about a certain distribution. One can have a mix of
different distribution's rpms installed.
