p.s. although it is still unnerving that, although the operation fails,
i still get partial results installed for the rpm DB, and in *different*
directories. i'll look more into that, it still seems a bit odd.

and, of course, it all ties back into the failure to chroot. sigh.
i really *hate* having to use root privileges for things that don't,
on the surface, seem to require them. i think i'm going to give
up for the day and go watch football.
