Something I've been wondered about for as long as I've been using RPM:
Is there a way I can get rpm -U or similar to simply skip any package

install the ones that need upgrade or first-time installation, rather
than simply exiting when the situation occurs?
If you are not familiar with apt and yum, take a look at
http://www.fedora.us/
and
http://www.fedora.us/wiki/FedoraHOWTO
They may fit your needs.
Also, rpm --freshen may do some of what you want.
