building rpm?

Hey, all.  I'm extremely confused by what rpmbuild is doing these days 
and I'm not finding much doc.  On the theory that I should probably just 
drop it into gdb and step around a bit, I tried to build a copy of 
4.4.6, 4.4.5, 4.4.4, etc, but I'm not having much luck on either fc4 of 
rhel4.

Can anyone tell me how to go about building rpm?
