Yep, the file command will work.
Be forewarned, rpm-4.4.8 is in the process of dropping the lead
(which will break your test for a srpm), so I still recommend
testing for the non-existence of RPMTAG_SOURCERPM to
detect a SRPM.
But you probably don't care ;-)
