This was exactly my response to Xilinx. They claim support for WS4, so, my
take is that it should work on WS4 (i.e. without special provisions).
I am looking at up2date, but I could not figure out how to get it to
recognize a new package (something that was not already installed and part
of the STD WS4 group, such as YUM).

apt/yum is definitely the way to go, but you could also try up2date.
