How to prevent rpmbuild from building %package subpackages?

Hello,

I guess this is a really obvious question, but I'm stumped and I haven't
been able to dig up an answer for this..

How can I prevent rpmbuild from building subpackages?  I want to build a
php SRPM, but without many of the component packages.  I've tried
--without-<SUBNAME>, --define "<SUBNAME> 0", etc. etc. 

Must the SPEC file be specially written?

This is on a FC4 machine if that's relevent and rpm 4.4.1.

I'm getting ready to browse the source to answer this!
