My last gig was for a company that solved the problem by rolling all known
package formats for their product. My task was to take their software and
roll it up into rpm, deb, pkg, etc for every possible type of packaging
system. Tar files are universal (sort of), but the point was that people
want their software to be delivered in the packaging format that's native
to the system it gets installed on.
