Is it possible that the version of python that you're running is somehow
still picking up bits of the old python you have installed on your
system, eg in /usr/lib/python2.4, rather than /usr/local/lib/python2.4?
Also did you try rpm -i --relocate /usr=/usr/local. Worth a try at the
very least.
