Before you do that, you might want to try reinstalling gdm and see if
things improve, or even stop using gdm altogether.  I've done the later
myself, having had similar problems with gdm in the past.  What this
means is that when you boot up you'll get a console mode login screen
instead of the graphical Red Hat screen, and you'll have to explicitly
start XFree86 with the 'startx' command.  Not much trouble really.

To do this, su to root and edit /etc/inittab, find the line that says
'id:5:initdefault:', and change the '5' to a '3'.  Be careful not to
change anything else.  What this does is change your default runlevel
from 5 to 3 (no X server).
