running kernel 2.2 until 2.4 VM problems are sorted out

My 7.1 installation is quite unstable on two very similar boxes; one
at NYU one at home. If I run gnome-session (which of course runs
other things) then my mean time to system freeze is about 1 day.

I have waited a few minutes (but not many minutes) to see if it
thaws. No luck. I have swap space = 4 * ram (3GB and .75 GB).
When I reset the machine and about half the time fsck needs manual
intervention and some times files need to go into lost+found.

I am hopeful that 2.4.6 or so will fix this problem (VM freezes are
mentioned in the linux-kernel mailing list) but until then I would
like to run a 2.2 kernel (I had no freezes with rh7.0).

I can get a 2.2.19 kernel and build it (I built 2.4.4 in a hope this
would fix the problem), but have two questions.

1. Can I use kernel-smp-2.2.19-7.0.1.i686.rpm from
    updates.redhat.com/7.0/en/os/i686?

2. What other rpms (programs) must I ``downgrade'' when I go to
    2.2?

thanks,
allan
