hardware compatibility

I want to upgrade my motherboard and processor.  If I simply turn off
my computer, replace my old hardware with my new hardware, and turn it
back on..everything *should* work, right?  There are no hardware
configuration files somewhere I'll need to modify?

I'm switching from an Intel Pentium II processor to an AMD Athlon
Thunderbird.  Will this cause any problems (archetecture-related)?
