Thank you for the suggestions.
It just happened that I found the Printing-Howto
file, which led me to verify the BIOS settings
for Plug-and-Play, one of those architectural
disasters that plague our lives.
I changed the 'Peripherals control'
in the BIOS from 'Auto' to 'Enable', and now the
printer works fine.
I only cannot understand why my computer suddenly
stopped printing without my touching the BIOS.
Fortunately, there is a reason for everything, and
this lesson I will never forget.
