Some time ago, when I was running psyche, I tried unsuccessfully (like
you) to change some X parameters with redhat-config-xfree86.

After lots of failures and logs reading (*hint hing*) I figured out that
"redht-config-xfree86" did NOT like the fact that my keyboard layout was
Spanish; I had to change it to "English" (via "setup") and it worked
like a charm.

Probably you could give a try to that? ;)
