> My connection doesn't get better than 28.8 either.  I use gftp to download the rpms from updates.redhat.com. I then move them to the directory /var/spool/up2date/.  The next time I run up2date it will tell me that the rpm is already downloaded and go ahead and install it.

Or to put it another way. up2date does not work well over a modem to
download updates.
