I'm just using the mysql client program:
mysql -h <sql_server> -u <username> -p <databasename>
It prompts me for my password, and I get the error kicked back to me.

yeah, I'm just using the regular mysql client. if I wrote a php script
and called 'mysql_connect(...)' then it would fail as well unless we
allowed the user to connect from the alias (www.sited.com) and the real
address (www.sitea.com). Which is weird. I shouldn't have to open up
*all* the addresses for a server
