Take a look at what it failed on.  I have a stock 2.5.73 kernel running
on two desktops and a laptop.  I did however, have to deselect several
features due to compile errors (they didn't apply to my hardware
anyway).  I noticed a few of the NIC drivers seemed b0rked.
