Elton's Linux Solution to this problem:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Re-enabling MP3 / MPEG support in Red Hat 9 (Shrike):
1) http://www.mpg123.de/cgi-bin/sitexplorer.cgi?/mpg123/precompiled/
download and install:
mpg123-0.59q-1.i386.rpm OR mpg123-0.59q.3dnow-1.i386.rpm
This will allow you to preview sound files by placing your mouse pointer
on any mp3 sound file icon in Gnome / Nautilus (will NOT work in KDE).
2)http://www.gurulabs.com/downloads.html
download and install:
xmms-1.2.7-22.i386.rpm
mp3-1.2.7-22.i386.rpm
xmms-skins-1.2.7-22.i386.rpm
Once installed, you can now *click* on any mp3 sound file in Gnome
or KDE, and it will load in the Xmms player.
CAVEAT: If you install the mpg* packages from freshrpms,
audio (speech) recorded CDs will suffer from the "chipmunk effect".
Hence, I have *specifically* indicated the above sites / sources
for download.
cheers,
Elton Woo ;-)
