FWIW, the "Shirke" in the subject was accidental, not a comment.

And thanks gentlemen, your combined advice appears to have worked.  I
had not in fact a working config file - I thought "make oldconfig"
generated one.

I followed all your advice and the build completed without error.  I had
this problem with 8 as well, and hadn't figured out why.  9 came out,
and I hoped upgrading would fix it.

Now I can get on with fixing some dependent configuration problems.
