up2date broken after new install

After a fresh new install of RH9, I am unable to register the system for
updates from the RHN. I get a blank blue screen and nothing else when I
run up2date. It appears to hang and doesn't respond to any keys. When I login
on another console and run ps, I see python and userhelper running.

Any ideas?
