ok I have no /dev/cdrom and in /dev I have no listings like below, there are
a few sym links but none for the cd rom, maybe I left something out here
this is not a fresh install it is an upgrade from RH 8, does this make a
difference. What are my next steps to try and fix this.

Brian,
I have the following two symbolic links in my /dev directory:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 May 28 19:25 cdrom -> /dev/scd0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 May 29 11:17 cdwriter -> /dev/sg0
and in /etc/grub.conf the boot stanza contains an hdc spec for my IDE
CD-RW drive:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-13.9 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
These two seem to take care of all my needs.
If you have both of these and you still can't see your CD-ROM, try
physically reseating all cable ends and check your dmesg output to see if
there are any errors detecting the presence of your CD-ROM.
