Recording Midi to Wave

All I can find to record is something called na_record and esdrec which
are not very well documented. I want to record a midi to a wave fie. I
tried timidty a while back and had a very difficult time trying to
configure the program.  I can easily record my midi files to waves in
Winblows using the wave editor that comes with AWE32 card, however, I am
getting noise in my recordings.  I would like to try and record in Linux
to see if I get the same noise. Any suggestions?  I think I'll try
Timidity again.  All I need is a wave editor with a record option, I'll
check the mp3 tools and see if I can use that.
