VIA VT82C686A chipset

I have the VIA VT82C686A chipset and am experiencing difficulty getting
sound to function.
I am fairly new to linux and any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

thanks

Here is a more complete description of the problem,

---------------------------------------------------------------------
System specs:
-------------
VT82C686A I/O bridge Chip
Redhat Linux 6.1
sndconfig (Sound Configuration Utility 0.38)
EPoX EP-6VBA motherboard, pentium III,

Running sndconfig reports,

  " PCI Probe Results
A PCI sound card was found in your
  system. The details are:
  Model: VIA Technologies|VT82C686_5
  [Audio] "

The sound sample test does not produce any sound and reports,

  " modprobe error
The following error occurred running the modprobe program:
  /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/sb.o: init_module: Device or
  resource busy
  sound: Device or resource busy
sb: No such file or directory "

Selecting OK reports,

  " Autoconfiguration failed!
  Autoconfiguration of your sound
  card failed. Now proceeding with
  manual configuration."

Selecting OK and then selecting "VIA 82CXXX PCI Audio" just repeats
the sequence from the sound sample test. i.e. It does not offer the
possibility of manual configuration.

* The following line was written by sndconfig in "/etc/conf.modules",

  alias sound via82cxxx

* /sbin/modprobe sound gives the same report as sndconfig,
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
sound: Device or resource busy
sb: No such file or directory

The "/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/modules.dep" file has via82cxxx.o dendpent
on sb.o, sound.o, soundlow.o and soundcore.o.

* when I reboot (after running sndconfig) dmesg has the following,
Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996
sb_card: I/O, IRQ, and DMA are mandatory
