[Sound] Error

Yesterday i had Linux installed and was setting up my souind with sndconfig 
under root. It said  warning:Display is set. IT is recommended that sndconfig 
*not* be run form X windwos. Continue anyways? i selected yes. and my 
computer messed up. it found my sound card. but yesterday my computer monitor 
kept coming on and off. i re insalled linux and went to the same prompt and 
the same message came on. What can i do, if you have aim, my name is 
SilkdaShock77
so u can help me trbouleshoot
