My ultimate take on things is: I don't want to see the UNIX world become
what MS has. I don't believe in lowering my standards just so
script-kiddies can screw this thing up too. Back in my day, everything
about computers was technical and confusing. If you didn't understand it,
you didn't touch it. People worked hard to know and understand it. Not
like today where it's like.. put the cd in the drive and Windows will do
the rest. kudzu is a good example of MS-like behavior.
I like how Linux is becoming more and more appealing to the home user, but
Linux doesn't have to lower its standards in order to come out on top. MS
is digging a hole from which they'll never be able to climb out of. After
Windows ME, everything's supposed to be NT-based. In order to maintain
compatability with older software, etc.. they're going to have to degrade
NT's performance. They should just say "enough is enough."
I'm waiting for the day that they do away with the x86 as we know it and
start making something with a less restrictive interrupting system, no
640KB conventional memory deal, etc. Kill compatability if it means better
things. I wish SPARCs were more affordable and easier to find.
Sorry for the rant... I'm doing other things at the moment :)
