Hi Bill,

You are absolutely right, thank you very much indeed!
Now I booted from the back-up floppy (!), and the uname -a now says:
Linux atlanta.gte.com 2.2.16-22 #1 Wed Aug 22 16:49:06 EDT 2000 i686 unknown
The sound now works fine. Not only that, the network connectivity is up
too, and moreover the mouse is not any more sluggish. You pointed to the
exact source of all these problems.
(For curiosity's sake, here is the "history" of all this. I got three SCSI hard
drives, sda, sdb, and sdc. In the present configuration, there is W98 on sda,
SuSE Linux 7.0 on sdb, and RH Linux 7.0 on sdc. I first properly wrote LILO
for the SuSE (MBR of sda). The mistake I made was when I then edited the
/etc/lilo.conf file on SuSE, on the sdb drive, adding there the lines
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=redhat
root=/dev/sdc3
intrd=/boot/intrd
not realizing that the first and the last line here obviously refer to the sdb
(the drive an which SuSE resides, and its kernel), and not to sdc... :-)
As an alternative to booting into RH from floppy, I have now replaced the above
four lines by the following two:
other=/dev/sdc
label=redhat
while also installing the RH's LILO in the boot record of sdc.)
Once again, thank you for your time and expertise.
Miroslav
