[Sound] sound config

hi,
could anyone out there help me config the sound system on my redhat7.1
i have upgraded the kernel to 2.4.18-24.7.x

when i run sndconfig, it detects the soundcard and when it plays the
sample sound, it gets stuck. nothing happens.
i would appreciate if someone told me what could have gone wrong or how to
go about setting this up. i tried to compile the alsa but i dont have the
kernel source.
