[Sound] Sound card Detected - No Sound or volume controls

I am relatively new to Linux and RH8.  I managed to get up and running
with the help of some others on the Install list and hoping you can help
here getting the sound up and running.  When I check to see if the sound
card is detected it detects and says:

I use a boot disk to start Linux and have XP on the other hard drive. I
have not upgraded Kernels, still using the original 2.4.18-14. System is
a P4 2.53, 512 Mb Ram, XP says Avance AC97 Audio, CD, DVD, 4 USB 2.0,
Lucent Win Modem & Reaktek Ethernet.
