Problems with Athlon installs

I've install taroon on two athlon servers (one single-processor, one 
dual). In both cases the install seems to go OK but then when it boots 
following the install I get a bunch of kernel faults. I didn't have an 
easy way to capture all the data but the stack trace usually starts at 
do_generic_file_read [kernel].

Neither machine can limp into life enough to run up2date. It seems like 
a complete showstopper - I can't believe that no-one saw this before the 
release.....

Is there any workaround for this problem?
