The 2.4.9 series enterprise kernels build just fine here from the srpms provided
by Red Hat. I initally used a 7.2 system to build all of the srpms the resulting
binaries I used to get a 2.1AS system up and running. I then recompiled everything
again on the 2.1AS system. In the end everything built except for about a half
dozen rpms like LaTex and the compatibility libraries. I never had a problem
getting the kernels to build.

What compiler are you trying to build it with??

There must be something wrong with your build enviroment. This makes no sense
based on my experience.
