If I'm understanding the issue correctly, I'm in the same boat.

I'd like to buy and use RHEL AS. It costs $1499 as an annual subscription,

No. It's $1499 for RHEL AS + 1 year support.
Next it's $96/year subscription for rhn.

I assume you're saying that you can buy RHEL AS for $1499 for the first year, then maintain updates for $96/year thereafter, and not that RHN subscription is an extra $96/year on top of the $1499.

Either way, that's not what RedHat's pages, including the ones you've linked, suggest. For the former situation, it seems pretty clear that the $1499 is 'a per-system, annual subscription' (http://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/purchase/). For the latter, it looks like RHN Enterprise comes with your $1499 first year price (same page).

If I'm wrong about either choice, RedHat is not doing a good job selling their product and describing their pricing and offerings. I assumed from the wording on all the pages that using RHN AS for 3 years would cost me $4500 per system. If, instead, it's $1691, that's a very different story. Much more stomachable. Can anyone else weigh in on this?

However, there's still the issue of my paying $1499 for software and "human" service (web, email, phone) that I don't want. I'd rather just pay for the software + updates. I'm willing to pay a healthy price to cover RedHat's costs of developming, testing, maintaining, etc. But I'm capable of doing all of my own technical support at this stage, and I'm a cost-conscious business.
