RHEL3/B1 ES System Hang

I just had a very unusual experience.  I was running up2date to get the 57
updated packages that were discussed earlier.  The downloading was in
progress, and I was responding to the "not GPG signed" warnings, when the
system just froze.  Nothing was happening.  It wasn't even answering pings
from my desktop next to it.  I couldn't do an "alt-ctrl-delete" shutdown.
Nothing.  When I rebooted the system, it came up fine, but I can find
nothing in the system logs to indicate what went wrong.  Argh.
