Any reason why the Rawhide version of Squirrelmail (1.4.x) wasn't
included? It offers additional support with PHP 4.3 for using SSL
encrypted IMAP, which is also supported/required in the latest uw-imap
iteration for plaintext auth.

Seems in an enterprise solution, this would be the way to go.
