Re: Forgive the rant...but

I created an init.d script to build NVidia drivers on workstations I'm
building with Kickstart. The script runs the first time the workstation
boots after installation so the driver will be built against the correct
kernel. It runs before X is started, so it gets around the "init 3; init 5"
dance. For its last step, the script runs chkconfig to turn itself off. Do
you think you could adapt this idea to your situation? Anyone know of a way
to detect when a new kernel is booting for the first time. Is so, then the
script could be chkconfig'ed back on.

I realize your rant was mainly rhetorical, but I thought I would toss out
this suggestion.

Is it really quite impossible to have a kernel update check for the
installed video driver and just use that? The problem is, as everyone
knows all too well is with the NVidia drivers. Each time the kernel gets
tweaked, have to use some time to recompile the NVidia instead of the
generic NV. Not that it's such a big deal, but just gets a little old
and tiring. This time around, thought I'd try to be 'smart' - lack of
tools and proper equipment between my ears; and run the driver script to
compile to the new kernel, before rebooting. AAAHHnnT! Tells me I
already have the driver loaded! True - but to the old kernel, not the
new one that I wanted it compiled to! So, back to the old dance, shut
down and reboot without X, run script, modify conf for NVidia and reboot
back into X. I'm very thankful that I don't have a shop full of NVidias
to have to do this for! If someone could please advise, is there a
graphics card out there, higher end, that the kernel will just be happy
to get along with & use OpenGL - without a little extra tweaking, every
time there's an update? My apologies - bad migraine day.
