I am performing the upgrade because I need my tape drive to work and
this was what was recommended due to SCSI problems in the version of the
kernel in RedHat ES 3.0.
If there are other ways to fix the SCSI problems without upgrading the
kernel I am open to suggestions.

This is going to be a barrage of the same responses to this ---
Why on earth are you using a vanilla kernel, replacing the crux of the
"Enterprise Linux" you have paid for?

I am trying to install the 2.4.28 kernel from kernel.org on RedHat ES
3.0.
I need the new kernel to resolve SCSI issues that are affecting tape
operations on my server.
I followed the upgrade instructions documented at
http://www.linuxtapecert.org/kernel.html.
When I reboot with the new kernel X fails to start. The error message I
get is:
OS Kernel: Linux version 2.4.28 (root netmon1) (gcc version 3.2.3
20030502 (Red
Hat Linux 3.2.3-42)) #2 SMP Fri Dec 3 08:31:20 EST 2004

When I try to run redhat-config-xfree86 I get the following error:

>From what I have been able to find the problem seems to be related to
NPTL thread support, or lack thereof in the kernels from kernel.org. I
have not been able to find a solution to this problem.
Can anyone shed any light on how to fix this problem?
Thank you.
